Ridge augmentation is really a key thing in planning for dental implants. When there's not enough bone, and we try to put implants in, and a lot of the failures I see that come from other offices, that's generally the case as to why they fail. They didn't plan well, and there wasn't enough bone. They didn't spend the time enough developing enough of the ridge to host the implants.
I find, and other successful implants dentists find, that as long as there's plenty of bone there, implants are 100% successful. They never fail. When they fail, it's usually a result of not enough bone. If you don't have enough bone, then you need a back-up, and add bone. There's a lot of different ways we can augment the ridge and graft bone in that allows us then later to put a successful implant in.
Very often we'll place an implant, and we'll augment the ridge at the same time. The other time that we often do it is when we extract a tooth. If we know we're going to come back and deal with an implant, when we take the tooth out, we're going to augment the ridge and add bone to that area so that when it heals there's plenty of jawbone to put the implant in that's really simple.
Do you have a jaw deformity that was caused by a tooth extraction or tooth loss Maybe you suffered an injury to your jaw and now don’t know how to fix the resulting deformity. If this is you, a ridge augmentation from Rod Gleave, DMD can help. This procedure will help rebuild bone mass and correct your appearance so that you can smile again with confidence and renewed oral health.
What Is a Ridge Augmentation?
When you have a deformity in your upper or lower dental arch, a ridge augmentation may be used to correct it. Dr. Gleave will use a bone grafting technique to rebuild the area and return it to a healthier state that looks much more attractive. He will use either natural bone from another area of your mouth or a bone-like material to stimulate new bone growth in the area. The procedure will provide a more natural-looking profile. It can also prepare patients for dental implant placement.
Why Would I Need a Ridge Augmentation?
Natural Deformity – Some people are born with a natural deformity. This is nothing you could have been prepared for.
Injury – Dental injury or trauma that affects your jawbone is another reason you may need this procedure.
Tooth Extraction – Tooth extractions can sometimes cause bone deterioration, which results in the deformity. A ridge augmentation can correct this damage and rebuild your bone structure.
