Ridge augmentation is really a key thing in planning for dental implants. When there's not enough bone, and we try to put implants in, and a lot of the failures I see that come from other offices, that's generally the case as to why they fail. They didn't plan well, and there wasn't enough bone. They didn't spend the time enough developing enough of the ridge to host the implants.
I find, and other successful implants dentists find, that as long as there's plenty of bone there, implants are 100% successful. They never fail. When they fail, it's usually a result of not enough bone. If you don't have enough bone, then you need a back-up, and add bone. There's a lot of different ways we can augment the ridge and graft bone in that allows us then later to put a successful implant in.
Very often we'll place an implant, and we'll augment the ridge at the same time. The other time that we often do it is when we extract a tooth. If we know we're going to come back and deal with an implant, when we take the tooth out, we're going to augment the ridge and add bone to that area so that when it heals there's plenty of jawbone to put the implant in that's really simple.
